Use case 05 · Sitemap to Markdown
Sitemap to Markdown.
A sitemap is already the list of pages. output.md reads sitemap.xml, including nested sitemaps, and turns the pages you keep into Markdown files you can export.
Free account, 10 markdown + 10 AI credits included. No credit card needed.
Today
- A sitemap.xml you open and then copy URLs out by hand.
- A crawler project just to get the article text.
- One giant HTML dump instead of one file per page.
With output.md
- A queue of the URLs in the sitemap, before any credit is spent.
- One Markdown file per page you choose to process.
- A ZIP of .md files, with the original URL kept on each item.
Step by step
How it works, in 4 steps.
-
01
Paste the sitemap URL
You do
In the app, choose Sitemap and enter the sitemap.xml address. Nested sitemaps are followed. The import stays on the same site, up to 1,000 URLs.
You get
A queue of pages. Nothing is converted until you process it.
-
02
Cut the list down
You do
Remove tag archives, paginated lists, feeds and pages you do not want as files.
You get
The set of URLs that should become Markdown.
TipSort by path so /blog/ and /docs/ are easy to keep or drop together.
-
03
Process the queue
You do
Start it. Each page is fetched, the article is kept, and the navigation, ads and images are dropped. One markdown credit per page you process.
You get
Markdown with headings, lists, tables and links, one item per URL.
TipPages behind a login are skipped. The URL has to be public.
-
04
Export the files
You do
Spot-check a few in the editor, then download the project as a ZIP.
You get
A folder of .md files instead of a sitemap.
Why it works
What you get out of it.
You see the list first
Credits are spent on pages you process, not on every URL the sitemap happens to list.
One file per page
The export is a set of Markdown files, not one concatenated document.
Same host, public pages
The import reads that site’s sitemap. It does not wander off to other domains.
What it costs
1 markdown credit per page you process.
A free account includes 10 markdown credits, enough to test the queue. A 100-page sitemap is 100 credits, and only for the URLs you leave in.
Packs are one-time top-ups — no subscription. See all packs.
Questions
Before you start.
How do I convert a sitemap to Markdown?
Paste the sitemap.xml URL, remove the URLs you do not want, process the queue, and export a ZIP of .md files.
Does it follow nested sitemaps?
Yes. A sitemap index is expanded. The import caps at 1,000 page URLs and stays on the same site.
What if there is no sitemap?
Paste the URLs yourself in bulk mode, one per line. See scrape a website to Markdown for that path.
Is this a full website migration?
This page is the conversion: sitemap in, Markdown files out. Moving a CMS is the website migration use case, and it starts with the same sitemap step.
Try it on your own material.
Paste a link or upload a file, and see the Markdown before you decide anything else.
