Use case 03 · HTML to Markdown

HTML to Markdown.

A web page is HTML wrapped around the thing you actually wanted. Paste the URL and output.md returns that article as Markdown: headings stay headings, lists stay lists, and the chrome stays behind.

Today

  • View source, then an hour of deleting nav, footer and cookie banner.
  • A reader-mode copy that still loses the tables.
  • HTML pasted into a chat window, menus included.

With output.md

  • The main article as Markdown, with the page title as the H1.
  • Headings, lists, tables and links kept. Images, scripts and embeds removed.
  • A .md file with the original URL stored on the item.

Step by step

How it works, in 4 steps.

  1. 01

    Paste the URL

    You do

In the app, use Single URL and paste one link. For a list, use bulk mode, one URL per line.

    You get

The page queued in a project. In bulk or sitemap mode you can drop URLs before they are processed.

  2. 02

    Convert the page

    You do

Process it. The page is fetched server-side, the main article is detected, and the rest is dropped.

    You get

Markdown of the article: headings, lists, tables and links. Navigation, cookie bars, ads, images and embeds are removed. One markdown credit per page.

TipJavaScript-rendered text usually comes through. Pages behind a login do not.

  3. 03

    Check the article

    You do

Open the editor. Cut a stray author bio or a “related posts” block if one slipped in.

    You get

The page reduced to the part a person came to read.

  4. 04

    Export

    You do

Download the .md file or export the project as a ZIP. A sitemap import does the same thing for a whole site.

    You get

HTML turned into files you can edit, archive or feed to a model.

Why it works

What you get out of it.

Structure survives

Unlike a PDF upload, a web page keeps its headings, lists, tables and links as real Markdown.

The noise does not

Menus, footers, share buttons, images and scripts are stripped so the file is text.

One page or a whole site

Paste one URL, a list, or a sitemap.xml and export the lot as a ZIP.

What it costs

1 markdown credit per page.

A free account includes 10 markdown credits. A whole site is one credit per page you choose to process, after you review the queue.

Questions

Before you start.

How do I convert HTML to Markdown?

Paste the page URL in the app and process it. You get the article as Markdown and can download the .md file. You do not upload a raw .html file; the converter reads the public page.

What HTML becomes Markdown?

The main article. Headings, lists, tables and links are kept. Images, video embeds, scripts, navigation and cookie banners are removed.

Can I convert a whole website from HTML to Markdown?

Yes. Use Sitemap mode, review the URL queue, process the pages you want, and export a ZIP of .md files.

Is this the same as Pandoc HTML to Markdown?

Pandoc converts an HTML file you already have on disk. output.md fetches a public URL, isolates the article, and gives you Markdown in the browser. Use Pandoc for a local file. Use this when the source is a link.

Try it on your own material.

Paste a link or upload a file, and see the Markdown before you decide anything else.
