Use case 10 · Competitive research

Read your competitors the way an analyst does: as text, side by side.

Screenshots age fast and cannot be searched. Pull your competitors’ pricing pages, feature lists and messaging into one project as Markdown and you have a corpus you can diff, question and summarise — this quarter and next.

Free account, 10 markdown + 10 AI credits included. No credit card needed.

Today

  • A folder of screenshots nobody opens twice.
  • Copy-pasted snippets with no record of where they came from.
  • Rebuilding the comparison from scratch every quarter.

With output.md

  • Every competitor page as searchable text, with its source URL.
  • One collection you can ask “who mentions SOC 2?” or “who charges per seat?”
  • A repeatable process: re-run the same URLs next quarter and compare.

Step by step

How it works, in 5 steps.

  1. 01

    List the pages that matter

    You do

For each competitor: pricing, features, about, one or two key landing pages, the changelog if they have one. Paste the list in bulk mode.

    You get

A project per competitor — or one project with everyone in it.

  2. 02

    Convert and skim

    You do

Let the pages come through as Markdown. Skim the headings — they are usually the pitch in miniature.

    You get

Positioning laid bare, without the design doing the persuading.

TipTheir H2s are their argument structure. Read those first.

  3. 03

    Build a Collection

    You do

Collect the pages into one collection called, say, “Competitors Q3”.

    You get

A single body of text to interrogate.

  4. 04

    Ask across all of them

    You do

Use Knowledge chat: “Which competitors offer a free tier?”, “How does each describe onboarding?”, “Who mentions compliance?”

    You get

Answers grounded in their own words, with the page they came from.

  5. 05

    Generate the brief

    You do

Generate one article from the collection with instructions like “Write a positioning comparison for our leadership team, neutral tone, with a table of pricing models.”

    You get

A first-draft competitive brief you can edit and share.

TipSave this month’s brief in the project. Next quarter, generate again and compare.

Why it works

What you get out of it.

Searchable, not scrollable

Text can be searched, compared and quoted. Screenshots can only be looked at.

Sources attached

Every item keeps its URL, so any claim in your brief can be traced to the page it came from.

Repeatable

Keep the URL list. Run it again in three months and see exactly what changed.

What it costs

1 markdown credit per page, 2 AI credits for the generated brief.

Five competitors × four pages = 20 markdown credits plus a handful of AI credits for questions — the Starter pack covers a full round.

Packs are one-time top-ups — no subscription. See all packs.

Questions

Before you start.

Can I keep the comparison up to date?

Yes. Keep the URL list in your notes, re-run it in bulk mode into a new project each quarter, and compare the Markdown side by side or ask Knowledge chat what changed.

Does it work on JavaScript-heavy marketing sites?

Pages are fetched server-side, so most lazy-loaded and JavaScript-rendered content comes through. Content behind a login is not accessible.

Is scraping competitor pages allowed?

output.md reads publicly available pages, the same way a browser does, for your own analysis. Respect each site’s terms and do not republish their content.

Try it on your own material.

Paste a link or upload a file, and see the Markdown before you decide anything else.
