Use case 02 · DOCX to Markdown
Convert Word to Markdown.
Word owns the document until you need it somewhere else: a repo, a notes app, a prompt. Upload the .docx and output.md hands you the text as Markdown you can edit and download.
Free account, 10 markdown + 10 AI credits included. No credit card needed.
Today
- A .docx that only opens cleanly in Word.
- Pandoc installed just to run one conversion.
- Copy-paste that flattens lists and drops the structure you then have to rebuild anyway.
With output.md
- The document as text in a Markdown file.
- An editor where you put the headings and lists back the way you want them.
- A .md download or a project ZIP, with the original file left untouched.
Step by step
How it works, in 4 steps.
-
01
Start with the .docx
You do
Use a modern Word file, .docx. Older .doc files are not accepted. If you still have a .doc, save it as .docx in Word first.
You get
A file the uploader can open.
-
02
Upload it into a project
You do
In the app, choose Upload and add the Word file. Give the project a name you will recognise later.
You get
The document text as Markdown. The filename becomes the H1. One markdown credit per file.
-
03
Shape the Markdown
You do
Open the editor. Word paragraph styles are not turned into # headings, bullet lists or tables on their own. Add the headings, lists and tables you want to keep.
You get
A structured .md file instead of a flat paste.
TipDo this once per document. After that the file is plain text and stays that way.
-
04
Save the .md file
You do
Download the single file or export the project as a ZIP.
You get
word-document.md, ready for git, Obsidian, a static site, or a language model.
Why it works
What you get out of it.
A .md file, not a Word file
The download is plain Markdown. It opens in any editor and diffs in git.
You control the structure
The conversion gives you the words. You decide which lines are headings, lists and tables.
Same account as your other sources
A Word spec can sit next to a PDF and a web page in one project, then export together.
What it costs
1 markdown credit per Word file.
A free account includes 10 markdown credits. Convert the first 10 documents before you buy a pack.
Packs are one-time top-ups — no subscription. See all packs.
Questions
Before you start.
How do I convert a Word document to an .md file?
Save it as .docx if it is not already, upload it in the app, adjust headings in the editor, and download the Markdown file.
Does docx to md keep headings, lists and tables?
The paragraphs come through as text. Word heading styles, numbered lists and tables are not rebuilt as Markdown syntax automatically. You add that structure in the editor, then download.
Can I convert .doc as well as .docx?
Only .docx. Open the old .doc in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx, then upload that file.
How does this compare to Pandoc?
Pandoc is the local command: pandoc file.docx -o file.md. Use it when you want the conversion on your own machine. Use output.md when you want to upload a .docx in the browser and leave with an editable .md file.
Try it on your own material.
Paste a link or upload a file, and see the Markdown before you decide anything else.
