Use case 01 · PDF to Markdown

PDF to Markdown.

A PDF is a picture of a page. Markdown is the text you can edit, search and hand to a language model. Upload the file, output.md pulls out the text, and you download a .md file.

Free account, 10 markdown + 10 AI credits included. No credit card needed.

Today

  • Copy-paste from a PDF that breaks every line and every heading.
  • A local toolchain (Pandoc, Python, Marker) just to get the words out.
  • A scanned-looking export you cannot drop into Notion, Obsidian or a prompt.

With output.md

  • One .md file named after the PDF, ready to edit.
  • The text in your account, so you can come back and export it again.
  • A file you can translate, summarise or drop into a collection afterwards.

Step by step

How it works, in 4 steps.

  1. 01

    Create a free account

    You do

Register. A new account includes markdown credits, enough to convert the first files before you buy anything.

    You get

A project space where each PDF becomes its own article.

  2. 02

    Upload the PDF

    You do

In the app, choose Upload and drop the .pdf file into a project.

    You get

The text of the PDF as Markdown. The filename becomes the H1. One markdown credit per file.

TipThis reads text that is already in the PDF. A scan that is only images has no text to extract, and the upload stops with that message.

  3. 03

    Tidy the draft

    You do

Open the file in the editor. Put real headings on the sections, fix a broken line, drop a running header or a page number that came along.

    You get

A Markdown file that reads like the document, not like a print layout.

TipMulti-column layouts and complex tables often need a pass. Simple paragraphs usually come through in order.

  4. 04

    Download the .md file

    You do

Copy the Markdown, download the single .md file, or export the project as a ZIP.

    You get

A plain file you can commit, paste into a prompt, or keep in your notes app.

Why it works

What you get out of it.

No install

Nothing to brew, pip or apt. The conversion runs in the browser after you upload the file.

Editable immediately

The result is a draft you can fix in place, not a one-shot dump you have to reopen in another tool.

Useful after the conversion

The same file can be translated, rewritten, or added to a collection you can ask questions of.

What it costs

1 markdown credit per PDF.

A free account includes 10 markdown credits, so the first 10 PDFs are free. Larger batches are a one-time credit pack, not a subscription.

Packs are one-time top-ups — no subscription. See all packs.

Questions

Before you start.

How do I convert a PDF to a Markdown file?

Create an account, open the app, upload the PDF into a project, check the text in the editor, and download the .md file. One file costs one markdown credit.

Does PDF to Markdown work on scanned PDFs?

Only when the PDF contains real text. A scan that is only images has nothing to extract, and the upload tells you so. output.md does not run OCR.

Will headings and tables survive?

You get the text, in reading order as far as the PDF allows, under an H1 taken from the filename. Heading styles and table grids are not rebuilt automatically. Add headings in the editor; simple text comes through, dense layouts need a tidy.

How is this different from Pandoc or a Python script?

Pandoc and libraries like Marker are the right tools when you want a local command. output.md is the browser path: upload a PDF, edit the Markdown, download the file. No toolchain.

Can I convert a PDF to Markdown for an LLM?

Yes. The .md file is plain text, which is what a model wants. You can also put several converted files in a collection and ask questions across them.

Try it on your own material.

Paste a link or upload a file, and see the Markdown before you decide anything else.
